Sudan Accuses Chad of Supplying Arms, Files Complaint with African Union

Sudan has lodged a complaint against Chad at the African Union, accusing it of supplying arms to rebel militias amidst an ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary RSF. Chad denied these allegations, asserting neutrality in the conflict. The war has caused tens of thousands of deaths and widespread displacement, with humanitarian aid efforts ongoing.

Sudan’s army-backed administration has officially accused Chad of supplying arms to the paramilitary forces it is currently engaged in conflict with. This accusation was articulated by Justice Minister Muawiya Osman, who announced that Sudan has filed a complaint against Chad with the African Union. The allegations suggest that Chad’s actions have resulted in harm to Sudanese citizens, creating further complications in a conflict that has already claimed tens of thousands of lives since its onset in April 2023. Amidst the rising tensions, the Sudanese government has demanded compensation from Chad for the alleged support of rebel militias and stated that credible evidence will be submitted to the appropriate authorities. Meanwhile, Chad has refuted these allegations, with Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah asserting the country’s commitment to peace and non-intervention in the conflict that has engulfed Sudan. Currently, the United Nations has been utilizing the Adre border crossing to facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries into Sudan. Though an agreement was made to keep the crossing operational for three months, Sudan’s authorities have not yet determined whether this arrangement will be extended past its expiration date of November 15. The ongoing war has resulted in the displacement of over 11 million individuals, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The conflict in Sudan began in April 2023, instigated by a power struggle between the regular army under Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces, headed by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The violence has resulted in significant casualties and the widespread displacement of millions of people. In this context, allegations regarding external support, particularly from neighboring Chad, have emerged, reflecting the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in northeast Africa and affecting humanitarian efforts in the region.

In summary, the Sudanese government has accused Chad of exacerbating its internal conflict by supplying arms to opposing forces, a charge that Chad vehemently denies. The ongoing situation has led to calls for accountability and compensation, underlying the humanitarian crisis that continues to unfold in Sudan. As the war progresses, international scrutiny and diplomatic maneuvers will be critical in addressing the conflict and its ramifications for both countries.
