Tragic Outcomes in North Darfur: RSF Shelling Claims Lives Amid Ongoing Conflict

On Sunday, RSF shelling in North Darfur resulted in nine civilian deaths and 17 injuries, with additional attacks in North Kordofan. The Sudanese Air Force responded effectively to RSF assaults, causing heavy enemy losses. The conflict has greatly impacted civilians, causing infrastructural damage and widespread displacement since last year.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) conducted shelling in El Fasher, North Darfur, on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least nine civilians and injuring 17 others, according to reports from the Sudanese Armed Forces’ Sixth Infantry Division (SAF). Additionally, attacks occurred in El Obeid, North Kordofan, during the Eid El Fitr celebrations, where a child was killed and eight individuals were injured.

In response, the Sudanese Air Force launched a counteroffensive, thwarting an RSF ground assault on El Fasher. They successfully destroyed four RSF military vehicles, resulting in significant casualties among RSF fighters. Furthermore, airstrikes targeted an RSF supply convoy, eliminating 12 combat vehicles and compelling the RSF to retreat.

On Saturday evening, five displaced individuals sustained serious injuries when the SAF bombed the Shangil Tobaya camp in North Darfur. The General Coordination of Camps for Displaced Persons and Refugees criticized the SAF for intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure and homes. Despite attempts, Radio Dabanga could not obtain a comment from the SAF.

Earlier in the week, SAF warplanes bombarded a market in the Tora area of North Darfur, near El Fasher, leading to reports of numerous casualties, with some estimates suggesting that the death toll could reach into the hundreds. Major General Ahmed Elkhader Saleh, the commander of the Sixth Infantry Division, expressed confidence in overcoming the RSF siege of El Fasher, asserting that “victory was looming on the horizon.”

Since May of last year, El Fasher has been engulfed in conflict, with the RSF intensifying its siege to seize control of the last government stronghold in Darfur. The ongoing fighting has led to the displacement of the majority of the city’s population and inflicted extensive damage to vital infrastructure, including hospitals and water sources.

The recent shelling by the RSF in North Darfur has resulted in tragic casualties and significant injury to civilians, particularly during festive celebrations. The SAF’s military response aimed to repel RSF forces underlines the intensity of the conflict in the region. The ongoing hostilities continue to result in widespread displacement and destruction, emphasizing the urgent humanitarian crisis facing the affected population.
