Somalia has supported Qatar’s mediation between DRC and Rwanda, marking significant diplomatic efforts to ease tensions amid ongoing conflict. The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised the initiative as a step towards regional stability, while expressing gratitude for Qatar’s role in promoting dialogue. The recently held Doha meeting is the first direct talk between the leaders since the M23 rebel attacks began.
Somalia has expressed its support for the diplomatic mediation conducted by Qatar, which recently hosted a meeting between the presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda in Doha. This initiative, led by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, was designed to alleviate the tensions arising from the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed this diplomatic effort, emphasizing it as a crucial move towards ensuring peace and stability in both the eastern DRC and the surrounding region. The Somali government acknowledged the commitment of the two leaders to achieve an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and reiterated its solidarity with the DRC and Rwanda in their pursuit of peace.
The Somali government also applauded Qatar’s commitment to fostering dialogue-oriented conflict resolution, stating, “We extend our appreciation to the State of Qatar for its role in promoting constructive dialogue and mediation to resolve conflicts through peaceful means.”
The meeting in Doha was significant as it marked the first direct discussions between Presidents Kagame and Tshisekedi since the intensification of attacks by the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels in eastern DRC. The M23 group, alleged by Kinshasa to have received support from Rwanda, had previously captured Goma and advanced towards Bukavu earlier this year.
Despite the call for a ceasefire from both leaders, the future compliance of the M23 rebels remains uncertain, particularly as they withdrew from earlier peace talks held in Angola.
In conclusion, Somalia has endorsed Qatar’s mediation efforts to facilitate dialogue between the DRC and Rwanda. This initiative represents a significant step towards peace in the region, with both leaders committed to a ceasefire. However, the participation of the M23 rebels in adhering to these agreements remains a critical concern.
