In a statement released on Wednesday, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed this diplomatic effort, emphasizing it as a crucial move towards ensuring peace and stability in both the eastern DRC and the surrounding region. The Somali government acknowledged the commitment of the two leaders to achieve an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and reiterated its solidarity with the DRC and Rwanda in their pursuit of peace.

The meeting in Doha was significant as it marked the first direct discussions between Presidents Kagame and Tshisekedi since the intensification of attacks by the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels in eastern DRC. The M23 group, alleged by Kinshasa to have received support from Rwanda, had previously captured Goma and advanced towards Bukavu earlier this year.
Despite the call for a ceasefire from both leaders, the future compliance of the M23 rebels remains uncertain, particularly as they withdrew from earlier peace talks held in Angola.
