Nahid, a 27-year-old sociology graduate, recently resigned from an interim administration that succeeded Hasina’s government. He explained that the current political establishment lacks the commitment to pursue meaningful reforms. “They were not even interested in the reforms for which young people sacrificed their lives,” he remarked.
The uprising last year resulted in the deaths of over 800 individuals, with Nahid facing temporary detention as authorities attempted to suppress student protests. Following Hasina’s ousting, he joined the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. However, Nahid determined that leading the NCP required leaving a government role meant to maintain political neutrality.
With elections projected for March of next year, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is anticipated to claim victory. Despite potential challenges in forming the next government, Nahid expressed confidence in the enduring impact of his political movement. “Our target is to sustain this energy for another 50 or 100 or more years,” he conveyed, emphasizing a long-term vision for change.
