The Federal Government of Nigeria confirmed the retention of Remitta as the approved payment gateway by the Central Bank, emphasizing its integration into the Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System. This system will streamline government revenue collections by including additional licensed payment solution providers while maintaining Remitta’s role. The TMRAS became operational on March 4, aiming for better revenue management across government entities.
The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) has confirmed that the Federal Government of Nigeria has not abandoned Remitta as the approved payment gateway by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Bawa Mokwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations, made this announcement on Wednesday in Abuja, clarifying that Remitta will be integrated into the new Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS).
This integration, as indicated by Mokwa, aims to involve other eligible Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs) alongside Remitta for enhanced government revenue collection and remittances. The TMRAS system officially commenced operations on March 4, 2023, and aligns with directives from President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.
Mokwa articulated the objectives of TMRAS, emphasizing its design to improve treasury revenue assurance and the budget performance of all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as Federal Government Owned Enterprises (FGOEs). TMRAS is structured to streamline and manage revenue collections and payments effectively across all government bodies.
Additionally, Mokwa assured that while Remitta is a secure channel for revenue payment, the TMRAS will enable various other licensed payment platforms to connect. He emphasized, “It will not be only Remitta, but all the other payments service providers that are licensed by the CBN will be able to operate.” Remitta remains the only approved payment gateway for Federal Government payments for a minimum of two months as management of the payment infrastructure transitions to the government.
Mokwa advised all revenue payers and the general population to continue utilizing Remitta for their transactions or visit www.fgntreasury.gov.ng for further information regarding payments to the Federal Government.
In summary, the Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed the use of Remitta as an approved payment gateway while integrating it into the new TMRAS. This system aims to include other CBN licensed payment solutions to enhance revenue collection and streamline government payment processes. All users are encouraged to continue utilizing Remitta until further integration is realized.
