Kenya Receives Sh360 Million Rice Donation from China to Combat Drought Challenges

Kenya has received a Sh360 million rice donation from China, aimed at supporting over 2.8 million people in drought-stricken ASAL counties. Officials emphasize the need for resilience against climate change and alternative livelihoods to aid communities. The support highlights strong bilateral relations and aims to improve food security in vulnerable areas.

The Government of Kenya has received rice donations valued at Sh360 million from the People’s Republic of China. This contribution is intended to aid over 2.8 million individuals residing in 23 Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) counties. This initiative addresses food security challenges posed by insufficient rainfall during the March to June seasons, exacerbated by the recent drought recovery efforts from 2021 to 2023.

During the launch of the food aid in Kumpa, Kajiado Central, Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul highlighted the importance of building resilience among communities to withstand the adverse effects of climate change. She emphasized the need for communities in ASAL counties to develop alternative livelihoods to mitigate impacts during severe droughts. “We have received 40,000 bags of rice to assist communities in ASAL areas who are facing drought due to below normal rainfall in the counties; even as we do so, we are emphasizing on embracing alternative sources of livelihoods,” she stated.

Cabinet Secretary Askul expressed her gratitude towards the Chinese government for its continuous support to Kenya during crisis situations, particularly those involving disasters. She urged the necessity of collaborating with development partners to enhance food security, foster resilience, and elevate living standards.

Furthermore, Principal Secretary Mr. Kello Harsama reiterated the critical need for community resilience. He mentioned that the Ministry is implementing initiatives such as constructing boreholes and dams to facilitate food production in ASAL counties. “We are investing heavily in water and smart agriculture and pastoralism to enable communities to cope with drought,” he affirmed.

Mr. Zhou Zhencheng, Minister Counselor from the People’s Republic of China, reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to supporting Kenya during difficult times, such as droughts or floods. He commented on the strengthened bilateral relationship between China and Kenya, highlighting mutual goals in socio-economic development. “The People’s Republic of China will continue supporting Kenya during such tough times as drought or floods as the two countries enjoy mutual bilateral relations,” stated Zhencheng.

The donation of Sh360 million worth of rice from China aims to enhance food security for millions in Kenya’s ASAL regions, which are facing severe drought conditions. Cabinet officials stress the importance of building community resilience against climate change through alternative livelihoods and infrastructure development. Continued collaboration with international partners is essential for sustaining these efforts and improving community welfare.
