Cote d’Ivoire has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, highlighting its compliance with international law and calling for peaceful negotiations. Tiemoko Moriko commended Morocco’s efforts in the region concerning human rights and development. He advocated for renewed discussions among involved parties and emphasized the need for adherence to ceasefire agreements and cooperation with the UN.
Cote d’Ivoire has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan concerning Western Sahara, aligning its stance with international law and praising Morocco’s dedication to achieving a peaceful resolution. Tiemoko Moriko, Cote d’Ivoire’s permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized this support during the UN Committee of 24 meeting, characterizing the plan as one that provides substantial prerogatives to the Sahrawi population, which he regards as a credible and relevant solution to the ongoing conflict.
This endorsement adds to the growing list of over 107 United Nations member states that back Morocco’s proposal. Ambassador Moriko also commended Morocco’s extensive investments in the region, highlighting their positive impact on local populations and the enhancement of the Human Development Index. Furthermore, he acknowledged Morocco’s advancements in human rights measures, including the establishment of strengthened human rights commissions and collaboration with UN human rights organizations in the region.
Moriko advocated for the recommencement of roundtable discussions involving Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front, referencing previous meetings in 2018 and 2019 as constructive. He encouraged these talks to continue under the same conditions, urging that all parties approach negotiations with “realism, a spirit of compromise, and good faith,” in line with the UN Security Council’s recommendations.
Additionally, Ambassador Moriko welcomed the involvement of democratically elected representatives from Western Sahara in discussions at the UN Committee of 24, urging all stakeholders to maintain adherence to the ceasefire and to engage cooperatively with the UN peacekeeping mission (MINURSO).
The human rights situation within the Polisario-administered Tindouf refugee camps in Algeria remains a point of concern for Cote d’Ivoire. Moriko reiterated the calls for a population census, aligning with the recommendations from the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and relevant resolutions by the Security Council.
