The Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, provided these statistics in response to a parliamentary query, noting that Indian prisoners are notably prevalent in Qatar (611), Kuwait (387), and Malaysia (338) as well, along with others in various countries.
The report also reveals that of the 10,152 Indian prisoners, 1,226 in Saudi Arabia are awaiting trial, making it the country with the most significant number of under-trial Indians. Other nations with a considerable count of under-trial cases included the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Malaysia.
Moreover, the government has stated that 54 Indian citizens have received death penalties from foreign courts, primarily in the UAE (29 cases) and Saudi Arabia (12 cases). Singh assured that the Indian diplomatic missions are aiding citizens under such circumstances by providing legal assistance and ensuring consular access to maintain oversight over their cases.
In terms of fishing-related detentions, there are currently 307 Indian fishermen held in various countries. The highest number is in Pakistan (217), followed by Sri Lanka (58) and Saudi Arabia (28). The Ministry has taken significant steps to advocate for their early release.
