UNMISS Partners with Spiritual Leaders to Promote Youth Peace in South Sudan

UNMISS partners with Prophet Dak Kueth to promote peace and discourage youth violence in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. Following deteriorating security conditions, the organization emphasizes stability and peaceful elections in 2026. Prophet Kueth actively discourages revenge among youth affected by violence while addressing alarming trends in abduction and conflict.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) collaborated with spiritual leader Prophet Dak Kueth to promote peace and discourage violence among the youth of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. Following new security concerns, peacekeepers traveled to the remote location to meet with community leaders and discuss strategies to bolster stability in the region.

Geetha Pious, the head of the Bor Field Office at UNMISS, emphasized the organization’s dedication to promoting peace between the Murle and Nuer communities. She noted the importance of a peaceful transition as South Sudan approaches its upcoming elections in 2026 and affirmed UNMISS’s support for Umor and its development objectives.

The security landscape in Greater Lou Nuer has significantly worsened due to youth violence. In response, Prophet Kueth has taken an active role in urging the youth to abandon revenge and consider the long-term harm caused by ongoing conflicts. He described an alarming trend of abductions and violence affecting local communities, further complicating the peace process.

The Prophet highlighted the dire situation, stating that armed individuals from nearby areas had recently taken 32 children, prompting anger and frustration among Nuer youth. He cautioned that retaliatory violence must be avoided to break the cycle of retribution that has plagued the community for years.

UNMISS remains committed to working with Jonglei State leadership and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. The Mission is also organizing a peace conference in Juba meant to unite government officials and local chiefs to formulate effective conflict prevention and resolution strategies.

The initiative led by UNMISS and spiritual leaders like Prophet Dak Kueth aligns with broader efforts to strengthen peace in South Sudan, particularly within communities that have experienced significant violence. The engagement is crucial in addressing the recent escalations in conflict, especially among youth who are often drawn into cycles of violence. Understanding the social dynamics and the impact of cultural leaders such as Prophet Kueth is essential for fostering peace and stability in the region.

The collaboration between UNMISS and community spiritual leaders is a strategic effort to promote peace in South Sudan, particularly among the youth. With increasing violence and insecurity in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, initiatives like these are vital for encouraging reconciliation and preventing further conflicts. The ongoing support from UNMISS, alongside local leaders, aims to break the cycle of violence and foster long-term stability in the region.
