South Sudan Enacts Nationwide Curfew Amid Anti-Sudanese Protests

Following violent anti-Sudanese demonstrations, South Sudan has imposed a nationwide curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to curb looting and violence. The protests were ignited by alleged killings of South Sudanese in Sudan by the Sudanese Armed Forces. The government mandates businesses to close early and urges citizens to comply with security enforcement for public safety.

South Sudan’s Inspector General of Police, Abraham Manyuat Peter, has instituted a nationwide curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in response to violent anti-Sudanese demonstrations resulting in three fatalities and seven injuries. The curfew aims to prevent further looting occurring in the capital city, Juba, and various other regions. Businesses must cease operations by 5 p.m. as part of this security initiative.

The unrest in South Sudan stems from public demonstrations condemning the brutal killings of South Sudanese citizens in Sudan by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Manyuat has expressed the need for such measures to protect civilians and their belongings, urging the population to remain indoors during curfew hours and comply with law enforcement directives.

Colonel John Kassara Koang Nhial, spokesperson for the South Sudan National Police Service, confirmed the violent protests in Juba particularly affected areas like Gudele One and Gudele Two. Tragically, victims of the violence have been admitted to the Juba Teaching Hospital. He indicated that demonstrations were a response to the slaughter of South Sudanese individuals in Wad Medani, Sudan.

Social media has been rife with distressing images of the deceased from Wad Madani, heightening worries for many South Sudanese citizens stuck in the conflict-ridden neighboring country. In response to the unrest, all businesses owned by Sudanese nationals in Juba and across the nation have been closed until further notice.
