Lebanon secured a $7.3 million deal with France to enhance green agriculture, benefiting 2,500 farmers and over 150 cooperatives. The initiative aims to promote eco-friendly agriculture and raise awareness, supervised by the Lebanese Agriculture Ministry over four years, initiated during a seminar in Cairo.

On December 19, Lebanon formalized a significant partnership with France by securing a $7.3 million agreement aimed at enhancing green agriculture practices within the country. This accord was established during a seminar held in Cairo, as reported by Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), and was signed by representatives from the French Development Agency and CIHEAM Montpellier, in the presence of Lebanon’s Agriculture Minister, Abbas Hajj Hassan. The initiative is poised to assist approximately 2,500 Lebanese farmers in adopting sustainable agricultural practices and seeks to engage over 150 cooperatives and private traders to enhance the quality of agricultural products in Lebanon.

The project’s overarching objectives include not only the operational transition to eco-friendly agriculture but also fostering public awareness regarding environmentally conscious practices and policies. CIHEAM Montpellier, relevant to this initiative, functions under the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies, a respected intergovernmental body from France comprising 13 member states such as Lebanon and others in the Mediterranean region. The project is expected to unfold over a four-year timeline, under the careful administration of the Lebanese Agriculture Ministry, making significant strides towards sustainable agriculture in Lebanon.

The agreement between Lebanon and France reflects a growing emphasis on sustainable agriculture amid global climate concerns. The initiative marks an essential step towards modernizing Lebanese agricultural practices, which have faced numerous challenges in recent years due to economic difficulties and environmental issues. By collaborating with France, Lebanon aims to leverage international expertise and resources, particularly through CIHEAM Montpellier, focusing on sustainability and ecological practices that benefit farmers and enhance agricultural outputs. This partnership underscores the vital role of international cooperation in bolstering Lebanon’s agricultural sector and promoting food security.

The signing of the $7.3 million agreement between Lebanon and France signifies a pivotal development in the country’s journey towards sustainable agriculture. With the intended benefits projected to uplift thousands of local farmers and strengthen cooperative networks, this partnership stands as a testament to Lebanon’s commitment to ecological practices. As the project embarks on its four-year implementation phase, it embodies hope for revitalizing Lebanon’s agricultural landscape and enhancing community resilience amidst increasing environmental challenges.
