Nigeria Solicits South Africa’s Support for BRICS and G20 Membership

Nigeria has sought South Africa’s assistance in gaining full membership in the G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank. During the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission, Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized the need for South African collaboration in leadership roles and the Sudanese peace process, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to regional stability.

On Monday, Nigeria expressed its desire for support from South Africa regarding its pursuit of full membership in the G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank. During the ministerial closing remarks at the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission in Cape Town, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, urged for South Africa’s collaboration, especially in leadership roles during the South African presidency of the G20.

South Africa officially assumed the presidency of the Group of 20 on December 1, which represents the world’s wealthiest nations. The BRICS bloc, in which South Africa is a significant player, has been recognized for its substantial contribution to global economic growth, accounting for approximately 37% of worldwide GDP. Ojukwu also reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to fostering regional peace, seeking South Africa’s assistance in expediting the peace process in Sudan.

Minister Ojukwu emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to resolving the Sudanese conflict, advocating for quicker progress in the peace dialogue to enhance stability in the region. “We are dedicated to resolving the Sudan situation, and under this pretext, we request South Africa’s assistance in accelerating the peace process and ensuring that tensions in our region are de-escalated. With peace, we can aspire for better progress and development in all fields,” she stated. The successful completion of the ministerial session resulted in a communiqué and minutes that will be presented to Presidents Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.

Dr. Roland Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, acknowledged Nigeria’s aspirations and assured that South Africa would amplify Africa’s voice during its term as G20 president.

Nigeria’s quest for enhanced participation in significant global economic forums such as the G20 and BRICS reflects its ambition to strengthen its international presence and influence. The G20 consists of the world’s major economies, providing a platform for addressing pressing global issues, while BRICS symbolizes a coalition of emerging economies contributing to a considerable share of the global economy. South Africa’s leadership in these bodies presents Nigeria with a vital opportunity for collaboration and support, particularly for promoting peace within the region.

In summary, Nigeria’s plea for support from South Africa regarding its ambitions for membership in the G20 and BRICS signifies an important step in regional and global diplomacy. The cooperation between the two nations, particularly in leadership discussions and the peace process in Sudan, underscores a collective commitment to fostering stability and development. The ongoing dialogues and mutual efforts between the two nations may prove critical in enhancing not only their bilateral relations but also in elevating Africa’s role on the global stage.
