Concerns Over Constitutional Changes in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo faces dire issues, including severe poverty, food insecurity, and ongoing instability from armed groups. President Felix Tshisekedi’s proposal to change the constitution, perceived by many as an attempt to extend his term, raises concerns about political manipulation amid the citizens’ struggles.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is grappling with significant hardships, where despite its wealth of resources, it remains one of the poorest nations globally. The eastern regions of the country are particularly plagued by insecurity due to numerous armed factions, resulting in widespread displacement and ongoing threats of interstate conflict. The severe humanitarian situation is compounded by the reality that over twenty-three million Congolese are food insecure, and the nation faces a devastating Mpox outbreak.

In light of the alarming socio-political climate, President Felix Tshisekedi, who assumed power under questionable circumstances in 2018, has shifted his focus since his controversial re-election in 2023 to constitutional reform. He has labeled the current constitution, established through a referendum in 2005, as “outdated”. The proposed changes have led many observers and citizens to suspect that his true intention is to manipulate presidential term limits in his favor.

It is imperative for the leadership in the Democratic Republic of Congo to prioritize genuine governance reforms that address the dire issues facing its citizens. Constitutional changes that merely serve the ambitions of those in power will only deepen the existing mistrust among the populace. Moreover, the international community must exercise caution and accountability in its engagements with the DRC, ensuring that economic relationships do not overlook the essential needs and rights of its citizens.
