LINX Expands Connectivity in Africa with New IXPs in Ghana and Kenya

LINX is set to enhance its presence in Africa with new IXPs in Ghana and Kenya, launching in early 2025. The Accra IXP will leverage data centers from Onix and PAIX, while the Mombasa IXP will partner with iColo. These initiatives aim to improve connectivity and support local ISPs in both countries.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has announced a forthcoming expansion of its interconnection services in Africa, with the introduction of new Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in both Ghana and Kenya. Scheduled to launch in early 2025, the LINX Accra IXP will be implemented in phases utilizing facilities provided by Onix and PAIX, enabling enhanced connectivity and redundancy. In Kenya, LINX will establish its second IXP in Mombasa in partnership with iColo, located at the MBA2 facility. This new IXP is designed to replicate the technical framework of the existing Nairobi IXP, which commenced operations in November 2023. Both initiatives are aimed at capitalizing on the strategic international connectivity offered by the two nations, which serve as landing points for multiple subsea cable systems.

The expansion of LINX into Ghana and Kenya represents a strategic move to enhance internet connectivity across Africa. Internet Exchange Points act as crucial infrastructures through which multiple networks interconnect, thus improving the efficiency and speed of internet services. By establishing IXPs in pivotal locations, LINX aims to foster regional connectivity, support local Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and facilitate growth in internet traffic management, ultimately contributing to the overall digital landscape of the continent.

In conclusion, LINX’s establishment of IXPs in Ghana and Kenya signifies an important milestone for internet connectivity in Africa. By enhancing interconnection capabilities, these IXPs will not only strengthen the local ISP ecosystem but also improve the overarching connectivity framework across the continent. With operations commencing in early 2025, these developments are poised to play a vital role in advancing the digital infrastructure in these regions.
