Their first test is against Australia on July 6.

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians are gearing up for their upcoming matches against Scotland and the Wallabies in July, featuring a fresh roster with four debutants. Coach Mick Byrne highlighted the youthful energy brought by players like Philip Baselala, Kavaia Tagivetaua, Sam Wye, and Salesi Rayasi, who have recently joined the 32-member squad. This influx of new talent signals a promising dynamic for the team.

Byrne conveyed his thoughts on the new players, noting, “I think with all young players, you just want energy.” He believes that the lack of pressure on these debuting athletes will allow them to contribute positively without the burden of expectations. “We don’t expect them to be the best player on the ground, we don’t expect them to lead anyone. We just expect them to come in, understand their role and bring lots of energy, and all these young players do that really well,” he stated.

The enthusiasm among the newer players is palpable, especially for talents like Baselala and Rayasi, who have previously expressed their aspirations of putting on the white jumper for the Flying Fijians. Byrne recognizes the significance of this opportunity, emphasizing that these players should remain focused on the excitement of wearing the national jersey. “Your dream to wear a white jersey is going to happen and they can’t get bogged down with that,” he said.

Byrne went on to underline the team’s responsibility to foster this positive outlook. “They’ve got to see that as an exciting opportunity and that’s on us to make sure they feel that way.” The final squad selection took place in Suva on Wednesday, with the full team expected to assemble on June 26. Overseas players will join the squad on June 27.

The Flying Fijians’ first test match is set against the Wallabies on July 6 in Newcastle, Australia, followed by a clash with Scotland on July 12 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The anticipation for these matches is building, especially with the inclusion of fresh faces in the squad, hinting at a bright future for Fiji rugby.

The upcoming July Tests for the Flying Fijians showcase a blend of new talent and youthful energy, with Mick Byrne emphasizing a focus on enthusiasm rather than pressure for debutants. With their first test against the Wallabies soon approaching, the excitement builds as these young players look to fulfill their dreams of representing Fiji on the international stage. The team aims to channel the vigor of its new members while aiming for success in the upcoming matches.
