Iran warns of retaliatory measures if the IAEA adopts an anti-Iran resolution, indicating increased uranium enrichment and strained cooperation with the agency. Behrouz Kamalvandi highlights the country’s readiness for a response as tensions rise with European powers pushing for sanctions. Iran criticizes the IAEA for biased reports and remains defensive regarding its nuclear capabilities.
Iran has made it clear that if the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) decides to adopt a resolution against it during the upcoming Board of Governors meeting, it will respond with retaliatory measures. Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), indicated on state television that the IAEA should not expect Tehran to maintain its currently cordial cooperation should this resolution pass.
Kamalvandi emphasized that previous warnings have been dismissed by the IAEA, which has led Iran to ramp up its uranium enrichment activities significantly – up to seven times at the 60 percent level. He noted, “We have prepared a list of measures if such a resolution is passed in the Monday session.” The planned actions include both technical adjustments and alterations in Iran’s approach to cooperation with the agency.
Moreover, Kamalvandi pointed out that while Iran had stated its enrichment levels do not exceed 60 percent, there has been a temporary increase attributed to specific technical scenarios, a situation he claims has been resolved. He voiced concern about European nations allegedly pushing for a resolution that could initiate the snapback of all UN sanctions against Iran, raising tensions of engaging the pre-2015 nuclear deal framework.
Complicating matters, the IAEA report from Saturday accused Iran of further expanding its enriched uranium stockpile, claiming a rise to levels necessary for potential nuclear weapons development. Iran promptly rejected these accusations, describing the report as biased and politically motivated. Kamalvandi reiterated the country’s stance against what it perceives to be unfounded allegations, especially after its previous good-faith cooperation with the IAEA.
In summary, Iran is on high alert following hints of a potential IAEA resolution against it, promising retaliatory measures if such an initiative is adopted. The ongoing tensions underscore the fragility of nuclear negotiations and highlight Iran’s resentment towards perceived external pressures. The situation remains fluid and could have significant ramifications for international relations, particularly with the European signatories of the 2015 nuclear agreement.
