The Diocese of Cyangugu in Rwanda and the Archdiocese of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo recently celebrated a solidarity visit amidst ongoing conflict in Eastern DRC. Bishop Sinayobye of Cyangugu led a delegation of five priests, including Father Valens Niragire, to strengthen the fraternal bonds between the two communities. He emphasized the significance of their relationship in these trying times, which he described as familial.
During the visit, Bishop Sinayobye highlighted the importance of cultural, spiritual, and fraternal connections shared between the dioceses. He remarked, “Despite the difficult situations that our countries are facing, we remain united in prayer, kindness, and positive actions towards each other as a people.”
A significant part of the visit included a meeting with the Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace in Bukavu, where they were warmly welcomed by Father Justin Nkunzi, the Commission’s Director. Father Nkunzi acknowledged the collaborative efforts and joint initiatives between the two dioceses, which promote peace, social harmony, and reconciliation in a conflict-stricken region.
Bishop Sinayobye and Archbishop François-Xavier Maroy Rusengo of Bukavu, along with their delegations, gathered in prayer at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Bukavu. Archbishop Rusengo expressed gratitude, calling the visit a powerful testament to their brotherly ties. He affirmed, “Political borders should never divide the Church of Christ, which is founded on the unity of God’s children.”
This visit aligns with the goals of the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa (ACEAC), which advocates for building warm relationships across regional political divides, fostering friendships among the faithful and promoting unity in faith despite external tensions.
