Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye’s visit to Vietnam signifies enhanced cooperation in politics, economy, trade, and culture, building on a historical relationship. The two countries, celebrating nearly 50 years of diplomatic ties, are committed to bolstering economic and trade exchanges, as evidenced by Viettel’s successful investment in Burundi. Future collaboration is expected to flourish, particularly in agriculture and infrastructure, aligning with Vietnam’s strategic interests in Africa.
The official visit of Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye to Vietnam from April 3 to April 6 signifies a mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation in various fields such as politics, economy, trade, culture, and society. According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Tanzania and Burundi, Vu Thanh Huyen, this visit underscores the importance of Bolivia-Vietnam relations in achieving these mutual objectives.
Vietnam and Burundi share historical connections and cultural parallels, having both battled colonialism. Burundian leaders regard Vietnam as a model for national liberation and development efforts. Diplomatic relations commenced on April 16, 1975, with embassies in Tanzania and China serving as the respective diplomatic channels for both nations due to the absence of direct embassies in one another’s capitals.
Throughout the last five decades, Vietnam and Burundi have cultivated their diplomatic relations via various channels, receiving reinforcement through high-level meetings such as Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s engagement with President Ndayishimiye during the 78th UN General Assembly in September 2023. The appointment of Burundian businessman Juvenal Sakubu as Honorary Consul in Bujumbura is instrumental, fostering economic cooperation, tourism, cultural exchanges, and offering protection services for Vietnamese nationals.
Both nations cooperate effectively at UN forums and in international organizations, evidenced by Burundi’s endorsement of Vietnam’s bids for non-permanent UN Security Council membership and the World Heritage Committee. In 2022, they signed agreements on visa exemptions and information exchange cooperation, further solidifying their ties.
Economic relations between Vietnam and Burundi are on a positive growth trajectory, with trade exceeding 2 million USD in 2024. Key exports from Vietnam comprise machinery and computer components, while imports include minerals and animal feed. A notable collaboration is Viettel’s investment project in Burundi, which has positioned Lumitel as the leading telecommunication provider and generated substantial employment.
Ambassador Huyen highlighted the historical significance of President Ndayishimiye’s visit and Burundi’s agricultural strengths, particularly in coffee and tea. The Burundian government aims to modernize its agricultural sector and diversify investments, particularly in mining and infrastructure. With the African Continental Free Trade Area in place, Vietnam anticipates increased trade with African countries, viewing this partnership as a pathway to mutual socio-economic development, peace, and stability.
The official visit of Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye to Vietnam reflects the strong commitment of both nations in enhancing their bilateral cooperation. With a shared history of colonial struggle and significant economic potential, both countries are poised to strengthen collaboration across various sectors. Notably, the partnership seeks to leverage Africa’s resources and Vietnam’s economic growth, fostering a mutually beneficial trajectory for socio-economic development and stability.
