On Saturday, Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced the formation of a transitional government, marking a significant step toward establishing a new political landscape away from the Assad family’s long-standing rule. President al-Sharaa highlighted his commitment to “building a strong and stable state” through this new government. In the cabinet, Foreign Minister Assaad al-Shaibani and Defence Minister Mourhaf Abu Qasra will maintain their current roles, ensuring continuity in leadership during this transitional period.
Additionally, Anas Khattab, previously the head of general intelligence, has been appointed as the interior minister, while Mohammed Yosr Bernieh assumes the position of finance minister. Notably, Hind Kabawat, a veteran opposition figure, has been appointed as the minister of social affairs and labor, marking a milestone as the first woman to hold such a position in the new government.
Kabawat, who represents Syria’s Christian minority and was a prominent opponent of former President Bashar al-Assad, previously participated in the national dialogue conference held in February. Since Assad’s ousting by Islamist rebels on December 8, daily administration in Syria has been handled by a ministerial team managing ongoing governmental responsibilities.
