The attack targeted civilians at a mosque, highlighting the ongoing violence amidst the Sudanese army’s attempts to regain full control of the capital. This incident follows previous reports of civilian attacks since the RSF lost significant territory in Khartoum commenced by a major offensive by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Furthermore, on Sunday, RSF artillery struck Omdurman, which is Khartoum’s adjacent city, resulting in the deaths of three civilians. Eyewitnesses referred to the bombardment as among the heaviest in recent months. The Sudanese military has reportedly captured the main headquarters of the central bank from the RSF and expresses that it continues to make strategic advances in the region.
Nabil Abdallah, a military spokesperson, indicated that Afghan soldiers had “eliminated hundreds of militia members who tried to escape through pockets in central Khartoum.” Currently, both the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces appear to be entrenching their positions, leading to a concerning trajectory towards de facto partitioning of the Sudanese territory.
Since April 2023, an unyielding conflict, primarily between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and former deputy commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has exacerbated a dire humanitarian crisis affecting millions.
