On Saturday, Sudan’s military announced its success in reclaiming significant buildings in central Khartoum from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), following Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s pledge for “full liberation” after regaining control of the presidential palace. Army spokesman Nabil Abdallah reported that key structures, including the Central Bank, state intelligence headquarters, and the Sudan National Museum, have been secured from paramilitary influence.
Despite these advancements, the situation in Sudan remains precarious, as the nation continues to be effectively divided. The military controls the eastern and northern regions, while the RSF dominates most of the western Darfur area and parts of the southern region. Activists have reported that dozens of civilians were killed due to a paramilitary attack in a remote area of North Darfur, far from Khartoum’s conflict zone.
In the initial weeks after the conflict erupted in April 2023, paramilitaries had overtaken and looted Sudan’s national institutions located in the capital. An RSF representative acknowledged that their forces had retreated from several sites in central Khartoum but insisted that the outcome of the battle was still uncertain, stating, “Our forces are now waging a fierce battle” near the airport, while requesting anonymity.
The Sudanese military has made significant gains in Khartoum, regaining control of crucial buildings previously held by the Rapid Support Forces. However, the ongoing division of Sudan with the RSF maintaining strongholds in the west complicates the situation. Reports of civilian casualties underline the humanitarian implications of the conflict, highlighting the urgency for resolution amidst continued hostilities in the region.
