Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian and U.S. officials will convene in Saudi Arabia on Monday to discuss resolving the conflict with Russia. This meeting will include technical teams aiming to clarify the terms for a cease-fire concerning energy and infrastructure. Following this, there is an expectation of U.S. diplomatic efforts to bridge any gaps with Moscow.
Zelensky expressed concern regarding Russia’s pre-conditions, which require the United States to halt military support to Ukraine and limit its mobilization efforts. He stated, “Moscow must stop making unnecessary demands that only prolong the war,” emphasizing the urgency of resolving these issues to achieve peace.
He expressed disappointment that discussions regarding Ukraine’s potential NATO membership have been sidelined, believing that inclusion would mitigate numerous challenges. He noted, “I believe that you can’t just give it away to the Russians. It is not right.”
Russia has confirmed its attendance at the talks in Riyadh, led by negotiators including Russian Senator Grigory Karasin. The focus will be on the potential resumption of the Black Sea initiative, relating to fertilizer and grain exports. Moscow has firmly maintained its position, rejecting concessions from Kyiv and asserting the importance of halting American military support for Ukraine.
Zelensky also dismissed the idea of U.S. ownership of Ukraine’s power plants, specifically the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station, affirming that it belongs to the Ukrainian state. He remarked, “If it does not belong to Ukraine, it won’t work for anyone. It would be illegal.”
While open to discussing U.S. investments in modernizing Ukrainian infrastructure, he clarified that ownership issues were not on the agenda. Furthermore, Zelensky refuted media suggestions that a U.S. takeover of the energy sector was discussed, highlighting that Ukraine’s energy integration with Europe has enhanced its energy security.
