Outgoing President Nangolo Mbumba commended Namibian women for achieving significant milestones following the election of Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as the first female president in the nation’s 35-year history. This historic event not only marks a new era for Namibia but also for southern Africa, with Nandi-Ndaitwah becoming only the second woman president on the continent, following Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia.
During a farewell gathering attended by dignitaries and heads of state at State House, Mbumba expressed pride in having led a nation nearing gender parity in its parliamentary representation. He praised the ‘zebra style’ method adopted by political parties, which promotes equitable gender representation in political roles, as crucial to the Southern African Development Community’s policies.
Mbumba stated, “Friday 21 March will symbolize the pinnacle of our nation’s efforts to ensure that Namibian women are empowered. Our Namibian women and girls will break the glass ceiling by ascending to the highest echelons of state power.” He reflected on his tenure, stating he was pleased to have served as vice president alongside President Hage Geingob, who passed away last year.
With palpable emotion, Mbumba shared his sadness over Geingob’s death, describing him as a brother and friend. He remarked, “Most regrettably, I am the only one who can say my goodbye today and I accept that it is my destiny to say goodbye to State House, not only on my behalf but also on behalf of president Geingob.” He expressed gratitude for the support from Namibians throughout his leadership, affirming that despite challenges, he successfully completed Geingob’s term.
