His ongoing absence has left his family distressed and has incited outrage among Sindhi nationalists, highlighting the dangerous climate faced by activists in Pakistan.
In a press release, JSFM characterized Laghari’s case as symptomatic of a systematic oppression of Sindhi activists by the Pakistani state. The group stated, “Pakistan continues to forcibly disappear Sindhi activists, journalists, and human rights defenders, using fear and repression to silence those who demand justice and self-determination.”
Additionally, JSFM drew attention to the environmental and economic challenges in Sindh. They criticized the Pakistani government for its construction of six canals on the Indus River, which diverts water away from Sindh and threatens the survival of millions dependent on agriculture. They proclaimed, “This is a direct threat to Sindh’s existence.”
On March 15, 2025, significant protests occurred outside the Pakistan Embassy in London, orchestrated by the World Sindhi Congress (WSC) to raise awareness about human rights violations linked to the canal construction and the fates of forcibly disappeared Sindhi individuals. Sohail Abro, Chairman of JSFM, attended and condemned Pakistan’s actions during his speech at the protest.
Abro asserted, “We demand the immediate release of Taiib Laghari and all forcibly disappeared Sindhi activists. Pakistan must be held accountable for its ongoing policy of enforced disappearances.” He called for an immediate halt to the canal construction and recognition of the Sindhi people’s right to self-determination.
JSFM has urged international entities, including the United Nations, British Parliament, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch, to intervene regarding Pakistan’s purported human rights violations. Their statement underscored, “Sindh is under attack–its people are being abducted, and its water is being stolen. The world cannot remain silent while Pakistan continues its crimes against the Sindhi nation.”
