The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) recently honored Uganda Police officers for their outstanding contributions to peacekeeping efforts in Somalia. The ceremony took place at the AUSSOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu, presided over by Police Commissioner AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu and other senior officials.
During the event, Mr. Bam acknowledged the officers for their resilience, dedication, and sacrifices amidst the challenging environment, stating that their efforts had revitalized law and order and bolstered public confidence in the Somali authorities. He expressed gratitude to the Government of Uganda for its commitment to enhancing regional peace.
The UFPU-12 contingent, which began deployment in April 2024, has played a critical role in supporting the Somali Police Force through various operational initiatives. AIGP Kanu, recognizing the officers’ exceptional bravery, emphasized their contributions in high-risk operations, community policing, and training efforts that have strengthened the mission’s overall objectives.
Senior Superintendent of Police Justus Asiimwe commended the collaborative spirit fostered with the Nigerian Formed Police Unit during shared operations in Mogadishu. He highlighted the unique relationships built between the different units, reinforcing their mutual understanding and operational effectiveness.
Other notable attendees included ACP Samuel Asiedu Okanta, ACP Richard Evans Onyait, ACP John Simon, and Col. Christoper Tumwine Columbus, all of whom play pivotal roles in coordinating the mission’s activities. The AUSSOM Formed Police Units support the Somali Police Force through various functions such as VIP protection, event security, and crucial training initiatives. In addition to Uganda, other countries participating in AUSSOM include Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
