The construction of a lithium processing plant in Zvishavane, owned by Zheli Mining Investments, is approaching its completion, with the final phase nearly finalized. This facility, costing 1.5 million USD, has a processing capacity of 500 tonnes of ore per day and is projected to commence operations next month.
Owen Ncube, the Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister, emphasized the project’s strategic significance. During a recent visit to the site, he noted the importance of lithium mining and the potential of the province’s mineral resources, including gold, stating that “these resources are vital to our national socio-economic development and integral to the aspirations outlined in our Vision 2030.”
Kudakwashe Zimhondi, general manager of Zheli Mining Investments, expressed optimism regarding the project’s status, having completed the installation phase and conducted a successful dry run. He remarked, “the government’s support for the lithium industry has been instrumental in our success and we appreciate its efforts in creating an enabling environment for investment.”
Once operational, the lithium plant is expected to generate employment opportunities for local communities, thereby fostering economic empowerment and skill development in Zvishavane. Zimbabwe is positioning itself as a key player in the global lithium market, drawing significant investments in this sector.
As demand for lithium surges due to its application in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage, this project will solidify Zimbabwe’s status as a competitive lithium producer.
