Recent heavy rains have devastated the DRC settlement in Swakopmund, causing flooding and impacting residents significantly. Local individuals express the urgent need for improved infrastructure to cope with such weather events and call for governmental support. Despite the severity of the situation, there is hope for better conditions ahead.
On Wednesday, unusual heavy rains caused significant flooding in Swakopmund, particularly affecting the DRC informal settlement. Residents struggled to protect their homes from the flooding, resulting in many areas being severely impacted. Caroline Kasenda, a local resident, noted the situation as “very devastating” and highlighted that many children were unable to attend school due to the need for home repairs and worries about waterlogged streets.
Kasenda emphasized the urgent need for improved infrastructure, stating, “It’s like it doesn’t matter how perfect, a shack is just a shack.” She expressed hope that the government would prioritize the residents of DRC in the coming year, as conditions remain critical. Jacqueline !Gorases, who owns Ubuntu Safe Haven Soup Kitchen, also voiced her concerns as she witnessed people attempting to repair leaking roofs amid the chaos.
!Gorases mentioned the stress inflicted by the rains, with many homes experiencing leaks and increasing frustration among residents. She pointed out that current residential designs are insufficient for handling rare but intense rain, which poses additional risks, particularly for homes with electrical systems. Despite the challenges, she remains optimistic, awaiting clearer skies to dry their belongings, remarking, “We are just praying for it to stop, for the sun.”
In light of these difficulties, the Swakopmund Municipality has referred to its ongoing plans for affordable housing and land development, scheduled for reflection in 2025, as a long-term solution to these pressing issues.
