Renergen Commences Commercial Sales of Liquid Helium in South Africa

Renergen has officially launched commercial sales of liquid helium following successful cooling tests. Natural gas from its Virginia Gas Project supports production, with estimates for significant revenue generation as phases one and two reach full operational capacity. Phase 1 targets 350 kg of liquid helium per day, while Phase 2 aims for 4,200 kg daily.

Renergen, a natural gas and helium producer, has commenced the commercial sales of liquid helium. The company reached cooling temperatures of -269˚C on March 13, allowing it to fill Dewars containing between 250 and 500 liters of liquid helium, with the first sales taking place the following day.

The helium produced is sourced from Renergen’s Virginia Gas Project, located in the Free State Province of South Africa. The company estimates that this project could generate revenue ranging from R5.7 billion ($313.7 million) to R6.2 billion ($341.2 million) once both Phase 1 and Phase 2 are operational at full capacity.

Phase 1 of the Virginia Gas Project is designed to yield 350 kilograms of liquid helium daily alongside 2,700 gigajoules of LNG. In contrast, Phase 2 aims to significantly increase output to 4,200 kilograms of liquid helium each day and approximately 34,400 gigajoules of LNG.

Renergen’s initiation of commercial liquid helium sales marks a significant milestone for the company. With ambitious production targets in place for both phases of the Virginia Gas Project, Renergen positions itself as a key player in the helium market. The successful transition to commercial sales demonstrates the viability of their operational strategies and the project’s potential revenue generation.
