In Zimbabwe, the General Chiwenga Voluntary Supporters Association (GCVSA) alleged that mercenaries have been hired to assassinate Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, whose rivalry with President Emmerson Mnangagwa has intensified. These allegations emerge amidst rising factional tension within Zanu PF, where political power struggles are now increasingly visible.
Christopher Mutsvangwa, Zanu PF’s spokesperson, publicly disparaged Chiwenga as “cruel, unintelligent and unelectable” in a recently shared audio clip, supporting Mnangagwa’s effort to extend his presidency beyond the constitutionally stipulated limit of 2028. Chiwenga’s demands for action against Mutsvangwa’s remarks have yet to yield any results.
GCVSA claims they have reliable information regarding a conspiracy not just to kill Chiwenga, but also to target anyone participating in a planned demonstration on March 31. Organization secretary general Ntokozo Msipha stated, “We pre-empt and categorically expose the treasonous move to deploy mercenaries imported from Sierra Leone, assigned with the heinous mission of eliminating General Chiwenga.” They emphasized that any foreign interference would be considered an act of war, warning that those involved will face severe repercussions.
Chiwenga is positioning himself against Mnangagwa’s potential move to remain in power until 2030, supported by his allies primarily from Masvingo province. War veterans led by Blessed Geza have announced plans for a protest on March 31, condemning perceived cronyism within Mnangagwa’s regime.
Amidst these tensions, Msipha declared, “We stand firm in full support of the people’s call to action on March 31, 2025,” citing this as a moment for decisive movement against oppression. He asserted that threats from the Home Affairs Ministry will not deter the populace, stating that citizens will not be intimidated by misrepresentation or threat.
Msipha also issued a reminder to police and military forces that their allegiance lies with Zimbabwe, not with a corrupt administration, asserting that any orders to attack unarmed civilians would not be tolerated.
Recently, a press conference organized by war veteran Ethan Mathibela, intended to promote the protest, was interrupted by unidentified individuals in Bulawayo, highlighting the ongoing threats against dissenters within the political landscape.
