Escalating Violence Against Civilians in Khartoum: A UN Human Rights Office Statement

The UN Human Rights Office highlights escalating violence against civilians in Khartoum, with reports of killings, detentions, and looting by military forces. Incidents of sexual violence have been documented, and calls for immediate action have been made to protect civilians and end lawlessness.

The UN Human Rights Office, through its Spokesperson Seif Magango, has expressed grave concerns regarding the escalating violence against civilians in Khartoum. Reports since March 12 indicate that artillery shelling and aerial bombardments by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in eastern Khartoum and north Omdurman have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, including humanitarian volunteers.

Moreover, credible information has emerged about the RSF and allied militias conducting raids in eastern Khartoum, leading to summary executions, arbitrary detentions, and the looting of essential food and medical supplies. Disturbing reports of sexual violence have also been received from the Al Giraif Gharb neighborhood.

Additionally, there have been incidents of looting and criminal activities by SAF-affiliated fighters in Khartoum North (Bahri) and East Nile, with arbitrary arrests continuing to rise in East Nile. The UN Human Rights Office calls for immediate action from both combatant parties and influential states to protect civilians and halt the prevailing lawlessness and impunity.

The situation in Khartoum is increasingly dire, with escalating violence against civilians, including deadly bombardments and human rights violations. The UN urges immediate actions from combatants and the international community to ensure civilian protection and restore order. The ongoing lawlessness and impunity must come to an end to alleviate the suffering of the affected populations.
