On March 19, 2025, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, expressed approval of the trilateral meeting held in Doha on March 18, 2025, between the leaders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The meeting, hosted by Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, included President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC.
Chairperson Youssouf commended both leaders for their dedication to dialogue and their peaceful approach towards resolving the crisis in Eastern DRC. Their commitment demonstrates visionary leadership and an understanding that peace, security, and stability are vital for the wellbeing of their nations and the broader Great Lakes region.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as established at the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit in Dar es Salaam on February 8, 2025. The AUC insists on supporting African-led solutions to challenges faced by the continent, which are also reflected in the Luanda and Nairobi processes.
The Doha meeting, characterized by constructive dialogue, aligns with ongoing regional peacebuilding efforts, and emphasizes the critical need for coordination among the African Union, regional economic bodies, and international partners to ensure lasting peace. Youssouf extended gratitude to Qatar and His Highness Sheikh Tamim for facilitating dialogue and confidence-building measures.
The AUC urges all involved parties to sustain the positive momentum generated in Doha and to collaboratively work towards fully implementing the commitments made during the discussions. The AUC remains committed to supporting these endeavors in its mission to promote peace, security, and stability across Africa.
