Renew Europe has issued a strong condemnation regarding the rampant sexual violence employed as a weapon during Sudan’s prolonged conflict, which has lasted nearly two years. As part of an urgency resolution proposed by the Group, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have urged the European Union and its Member States to support the International Criminal Court’s investigations into genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Darfur, boost humanitarian assistance to Sudan and neighboring regions, and ensure financial support for survivors of sexual violence.
According to UNICEF, an alarming 12.1 million individuals in Sudan are at risk of gender-based violence. Since the previous year, 221 cases of child rape have been reported, with 16 victims being under five years of age. Authorities involved in the conflict are urged to guarantee safe and timely access for humanitarian organizations, including the World Food Programme, especially given that two-thirds of Sudan’s population is currently endangered.
Hilde Vautmans, MEP, who spearheaded the discussion on the resolution, emphasized, “For far too long, Europe has looked away from what is happening in Sudan. Today, we make a clear statement; Europe must act and work towards a ceasefire. We urge Europe to impose sanctions on war criminals and to ensure that the UN arms embargo is effectively enforced and extended throughout the country. We have to protect all women and children from sexual violence. It must end here.”
