UAE Participation at EU’s Ninth Brussels Conference on Syria Transition

The UAE, represented by HE Lana Nusseibeh, participated in the EU’s Ninth Brussels Conference focused on Syria’s transition. The conference emphasized global support for an inclusive process, the role of women in peace negotiations, and countering terrorism. The UAE committed over EUR 1.5 billion in aid since the conflict’s start, highlighting its stance on Syria’s stability and sovereignty.

On March 17 and 18, 2025, Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, the Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Foreign Minister’s Envoy to the European Union, represented the United Arab Emirates at the EU’s Ninth Brussels Conference titled “Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition.” The event aimed to gather EU institutions, partner countries, the United Nations, and Syrian civil society to foster global support for a peaceful transition in Syria.

The conference highlighted the commitment of participants to assist Syrians both within Syria and in neighboring countries. The discussions focused on facilitating the voluntary and large-scale return of refugees without straining host communities or the limited support infrastructure in Syria.

In her address, HE Nusseibeh praised the collaborative efforts of nations and organizations in securing a brighter future for Syria and the region. She emphasized the necessity of an inclusive transition process, underscoring the critical role of women in achieving long-lasting peace. She stated, “There is a strong link between the active engagement of women in negotiating peace agreements, and the long-term durability of those post-conflict settlements.’

Additionally, Nusseibeh called for enhanced tolerance promotion and efforts to combat extremism and terrorism, condemning the recent attacks on Syrian security forces and violence against civilians. She emphasized the need for accountability for those responsible for such acts.

She reiterated the UAE’s unwavering support for the Syrian people, which has exceeded EUR 1.5 billion in aid since the conflict began, including EUR 250 million in the last two years. Furthermore, she affirmed the UAE’s position on supporting Syria’s stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, urging compliance with international law by Israel and the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement.

Besides participating in the conference, Her Excellency engaged in discussions with EU officials, members of the European Parliament, and senior diplomats from Europe and the Middle East.

In summary, the UAE’s participation in the Ninth Brussels Conference underscored its commitment to supporting Syria’s transition towards peace and stability. The discussions focused on the importance of inclusivity, particularly the role of women, alongside the need for maintaining security and promoting cooperation against terrorism. The UAE’s substantial humanitarian assistance further emphasizes its dedication to addressing the challenges faced by Syrians amidst ongoing conflict.
