On Wednesday, the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, emphasized her government’s commitment to improving historically neglected regions such as Apurimac, Puno, and Huancavelica. She stated that her administration is dedicated to rectifying the longstanding issues of neglect affecting these areas, an effort that aims to uplift the poorest regions of the country.
During the signing of an addendum to a State-to-State contract with the United Kingdom for the modernization of Guillermo Diaz de la Vega Hospital in Apurimac, President Boluarte articulated her administration’s commitment to social justice. She expressed concern over how social justice is sometimes misused for political gain, affirming her government’s sincere dedication to this cause and its efforts to combat corruption, which has historically halted necessary health infrastructure projects.
The signing of the addendum was described by the President as a pivotal move towards improving the healthcare system in Apurimac. She highlighted that this achievement resulted from collaboration between the Executive Branch and regional authorities, emphasizing the importance of social peace and joint efforts in facilitating progress and the development of healthcare facilities.
President Boluarte remarked that the modernization of Guillermo Diaz de la Vega Hospital represents an investment exceeding US$27 million. This upgrade is set to enhance the hospital from Level II-2 to Level III-1, transforming it into a high-complexity healthcare center equipped with sufficient facilities, including consultation and operating rooms, beds, and intensive care units.
The President assured that more than three million people in Apurimac would benefit from the new hospital, which will adhere to international standards of quality through the government-to-government mechanism established with the United Kingdom. Furthermore, she mentioned that the project would also alleviate the issues faced by the overcrowded Antonio Lorena Hospital in Cusco, where delays due to corruption have hindered progress.
Additionally, President Boluarte addressed the previous corruption associated with regional governors in Cusco, indicating that her government is actively moving forward without such malpractices. She disclosed that the Health Ministry’s regional hearings revealed public support for the reinstatement of the death penalty for egregious crimes, such as child rape and femicide, a matter her administration is considering seriously.
