Kenya and China are strengthening their partnership in media development through discussions led by Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani, focusing on economic empowerment, knowledge sharing, and modernization of media practices. This collaboration is expected to enhance infrastructure, training, and technology transfer, addressing critical challenges in the media sector.
The governments of Kenya and China are currently in discussions to enhance cooperation in the media sector. Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunications, emphasized that this collaboration aims to empower economies and facilitate the sharing of information and knowledge. Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation (BETA) agenda encompasses key areas including agricultural transformation, the MSME economy, housing, healthcare, and the digital creative economy.
During a recent meeting with Zhang Zhizhong, Deputy Chief of Mission of China to Kenya, and representatives from Kenyan broadcasting organizations, Prof. Kisiang’ani highlighted the importance of evolving media narratives to foster economic and social transformations in both nations. He remarked that both countries possess valuable resources to exchange, particularly in cultural diversity and access to advanced media technologies, including those related to Artificial Intelligence.
Prof. Kisiang’ani also outlined the need for substantial improvements in infrastructure and training within the Kenyan media landscape, specifically via guidance from the Ministry of Information and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). He asserted, “If you have an inferior technological setup, news will not be of good quality,” advocating for a comprehensive collaboration involving both personnel and essential equipment, particularly in the context of rapid technological advancements.
He pointed out the imminent challenges, especially regarding the necessary equipment, such as cameras and AI applications that enhance news processing and verification. Recognizing that the Directorate of Information originated under traditional practices, there is a pressing need for modernization that accommodates new digital platforms and training initiatives.
Minister Counsellor Zhang Zhizhong acknowledged the significant role of media collaboration in fostering mutual understanding between the peoples of China and Kenya. He underscored Kenya’s position as an emerging economic powerhouse in Africa, highlighting the potential for future partnerships. “It is very important for our media sectors to establish direct links to let the two peoples know better about each other,” he stated.
Zhang further expressed that collaborative output such as news reports and documentaries will address shared interests like climate change and cultural diplomacy. KBC’s CEO, Agnes Kalekye, confirmed ongoing discussions with Xinhua and China Media Group regarding technology transfers, noting that training in Artificial Intelligence has already commenced. She emphasized the urgency of upgrading obsolete equipment and the collaborative potential to advance toward 5G broadcasting, marking a significant stride into the digital age through equitable partnerships.
Kenya and China have maintained diplomatic relations since 1963, with a temporary suspension in 1967, before ultimately re-establishing their ties in 1978.
