Thailand ministers are visiting Xinjiang to meet Uyghurs deported last month, but only a few will be available. This deportation has faced international criticism and raised concerns about human rights infringements.
A delegation from Thailand, consisting of cabinet ministers and military officials, is traveling to the Xinjiang region of China to meet with a select group of Uyghurs deported back to China last month. The Thai government has announced that only five of the forty deported Uyghurs will be available for this meeting. The initial deportation, which occurred on February 27, was conducted secretly and disregarded warnings from UN human rights experts about the risks the Uyghurs would face upon return.
The Thai government maintains that assurances have been received from China regarding the care of the deported Uyghurs. Moreover, the government emphasizes that the trip has no hidden agenda. However, international scrutiny remains, with fears of repercussions from China influencing Thailand’s decisions in this matter.
