Intense clashes in Khartoum are escalating as government reinforcements try to reclaim territory from the RSF, which currently controls the presidential palace. The conflict has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, resulting in significant civilian casualties and mass displacement. Recent reports indicate a division of Sudan’s territories, complicating the army’s efforts to regain full control of the capital.
Fighting continues to intensify in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, as government troops reinforce their presence in an attempt to reclaim territory from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which currently control the presidential palace. The army’s Armoured Corps from the south has joined the General Command forces already stationed in central Khartoum and has successfully seized a hospital previously held by the RSF, who have been in conflict with the army since April 2023.
In a recent video address, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, also known as Hemedti, reiterated his commitment to holding the Republican Palace, threatening to widen the conflict into Blue Nile State and eastern Sudan while asserting confidence in his forces’ eventual victory. Over the weekend, shelling by RSF resulted in civilian casualties, including children, further escalating tensions as the army advances towards the palace.
As the conflict has persisted for nearly two years, it has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 12 million people, contributing to severe humanitarian crises. The United Nations reports that approximately 3.5 million individuals in Khartoum have been forcibly uprooted due to violence. In El-Obeid, a city located 400 kilometers from Khartoum, additional casualties were reported due to RSF shelling of residential areas.
The warfare has geographically divided Sudan, with RSF controlling much of Darfur and parts of the south, while the army maintains authority over the north and east. Recent military maneuvers suggest that the army may soon regain full control of Khartoum. The RSF has sought to establish a parallel government, widening their influence within the region, while humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate significantly.
The situation in Sudan remains critical as fighting escalates between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum. With military reinforcements and ongoing violence resulting in civilian casualties, the humanitarian crisis deepens. The geographical division of Sudan into territories controlled by the RSF and the army compounds the challenges facing the nation. Urgent interventions are necessary to restore order and address the profound humanitarian issues affecting millions of individuals.
