Shashi Tharoor, a Congress leader, acknowledged his earlier criticism of India’s position on the Russia-Ukraine war, stating it left him with “egg on my face.” He reflected on his objections to India’s stance during the war’s onset, expressing that the current policy allows India to play a significant role in fostering lasting peace. At the Raisina Dialogue, he emphasized that India’s PM can engage diplomatically with both Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the country’s unique position in international relations.
Mr. Tharoor articulated that his initial criticism stemmed from the violation of UN charter principles regarding the sovereignty of Ukraine and the inadmissibility of force to resolve conflicts. While underlining that he cannot represent the government’s views due to his opposition status, Mr. Tharoor indicated that if an agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine, India might consider deploying peacekeepers. He observed that Russia does not accept peacekeepers from NATO countries, suggesting India could play a crucial role if there is a consensus on peacekeeping.
With a history of over 49 missions globally, India is positioned firmly in the realm of peacekeeping, he noted.
