Quadri Aruna Becomes Africa’s Top Table Tennis Player, Surpassing Omar Assar

Quadri Aruna has displaced Omar Assar to become Africa’s top-ranked table tennis player, now holding 18th in the world rankings with 1,290 points. Despite finishing as runner-up at the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup, Aruna’s impressive performance in WTT tournaments propelled him to the top. In the women’s category, Hana Goda remains the highest-ranked female player in Africa, now ranked 26th.

Quadri Aruna from Nigeria has recently surpassed Omar Assar of Egypt to become Africa’s foremost table tennis player. According to the latest rankings released by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Aruna is now ranked 18th globally with 1,290 points, marking a gain of one position from previous standings. This remarkable achievement occurred despite his second-place finish at the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup and his distinguished performances in the World Table Tennis (WTT) tournaments this year.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) highlights that Aruna is the only male player from Africa to reach the semifinals of the WTT Contender in Doha, successfully repeating his semifinal accomplishment from earlier in the year. This success in performance contributed to his rise above Assar, who recently claimed victory at the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup.

In the women’s category, Hana Goda of Egypt has preserved her position as the top female table tennis player in Africa, moving up to 26th globally in the ITTF rankings. Her fellow compatriot, Dina Meshref, retained her rank as the second-best female player in Africa, remaining static at 33rd.

Globally, China’s Wang Chuqin holds the second-best position, following his compatriot Lin Shidong, who remains first. In another notable development, Japanese star Tomokazu Harimoto has ascended to the third spot worldwide, after ousting Liang Jingkun with his recent semifinal performance in Chongqing. In women’s rankings, the top five players have maintained their positions, with China’s Sun Yingsha continuing to lead after her successful defense of the WTT Champions Chongqing title.

In summary, Quadri Aruna’s ascent to the position of Africa’s top-ranked table tennis player illustrates his skill and resilience, particularly in light of his recent performances. Meanwhile, Hana Goda’s consistency in the women’s category and the ongoing dominance of Chinese players in global rankings highlight the competitive landscape of table tennis in Africa and worldwide.
