On Tuesday, President Dina Boluarte of Peru called upon business leaders to unite against crime and delinquency by investing in 47 projects within the “Works for Taxes – Alliance for Security” initiative, which totals S/1.6 billion (approximately US$439 million). She emphasized that collaboration from the private sector is crucial to combatting criminal activity effectively.
President Boluarte highlighted specific projects included in the portfolio, such as the construction of a new prison in Cusco, the enhancement of Challapalca Prison in Tacna, modernization of Lurigancho Prison in Lima, the addition of a maximum-security facility at Ancon I Prison, and improved security systems across strategic prisons. These initiatives aim to bolster the national prison infrastructure.
Additionally, the President outlined the construction of police stations in high-crime areas, acquisition of technological tools for criminal investigations, implementation of video surveillance, and the strengthening of citizen security mechanisms, including the deployment of new patrol vehicles. She reiterated the importance of cooperation between public and private sectors in building a safer Peru.
President Boluarte noted that these projects operate under the Works for Taxes scheme to ensure transparency and to bolster the fight against crime. She remarked on significant achievements in 2024 and early 2025, including decisive actions taken against criminal gangs, which led to their transfers to Challapalca Prison.
Furthering her efforts, the President announced the launch of the Alliance for Security to enhance collaborative efforts in the fight against crime. She mentioned that the results of her administration’s actions have exceeded those of prior governments, promising forthcoming disclosures of these results.
In her address, President Boluarte voiced gratitude towards the public for rejecting violence as a means of enacting change, advocating instead for fostering confidence in Peru to attract both national and foreign investments. She also reiterated her stance on advocating for the death penalty for hitmen and similar criminals, urging political dialogue on this serious matter.
