The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group will rebrand Pick n Pay Namibia to Model effective 1 July, ending a 27-year franchise with Pick n Pay South Africa. This change aims to create a unique shopping experience tailored to Namibians, while also ensuring the sustainability of the business and its employees. O&L emphasizes this transition as a return to its retail roots with a commitment to quality and local values.
The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group has announced the replacement of Pick n Pay Namibia with the Model brand, effective 1 July. This decision follows the termination of the franchise agreement with Pick n Pay South Africa, which has been operational for 27 years. O&L previously operated under the name “Model Supermarket” prior to this franchise agreement.
In a statement released by the company, O&L emphasized that Model will not only replace Pick n Pay but will also create an innovative shopping experience. During the launch event, O&L Executive Chairman Sven Thieme reflected on the company’s roots, stating, “The O&L Group’s retail journey began with Model in 1965, and now, 60 years later, we return to these roots with renewed passion and purpose.” Thieme further noted that this transition marks a significant evolution in the Namibian shopping landscape.
The formal launch of Model across Namibia is set for 1 July, with ongoing refurbishments designed to enhance the shopping experience. Managing Director Graeme Mouton indicated that Model intends to cater specifically to the Namibian market, promising a grocery retail experience that is inspiring and seamless, “designed around their needs.” Mouton reiterated the company’s commitment to quality, offering hand-picked products.
Mouton described Model as more than just a retail store but a movement, emphasizing its dedication to authenticity and local involvement. The aim is to create a store that embodies the values of the O&L Group, inviting all Namibians to join in this new venture. Previously, the O&L Group operated 19 Pick n Pay stores under a franchise agreement that proved financially unsustainable, leading to the decision for a rebranding.
Thieme pointed out that restructuring the business model is essential to securing employee futures, stating, “We’re taking the business back to us completely so that we have a sustainable business model, because I can guarantee you when we have the new business model in place, the future of the employees are guaranteed.” It was noted that external factors such as increased operational costs and recent losses reported by Pick n Pay South Africa have influenced this significant transition.
In conclusion, the Ohlthaver & List Group is set to revitalize the Namibian grocery retail space by replacing Pick n Pay with the Model brand. This transition, aimed at enhancing customer experience and ensuring sustainability for employees, reflects a strategic pivot back to the company’s heritage. By leveraging its history and local commitment, O&L seeks to redefine retail in Namibia, creating a uniquely tailored shopping experience.
