Mozambique’s second-hand clothing (SHC) industry is of paramount importance to the nation’s economy and social fabric, according to a report by Consulting For Africa and Abalon Capital Limited, commissioned by ADPP Mozambique. This industry directly provides over 200,000 jobs, supporting more than 1 million livelihoods. Established vendors earn approximately $650 monthly, significantly higher than the national minimum wage of around $90. Furthermore, SHC contributes roughly $35 million in taxes towards the government budget, bolstering essential services like education and healthcare.
The significance of the SHC sector in Mozambique is amplified by the country’s severe economic challenges, ranking 183rd out of 191 on the United Nations Human Development Index, with an unemployment rate near 25%.
