The Greater Tonj region in South Sudan has received 33 motorbikes to bolster peace and security efforts. These motorcycles will help law enforcement and community leaders respond effectively to emergencies. The initiative is part of the Kong Koc peacebuilding project, managed by the Reconciliation, Stabilization, and Resilience Trust Fund and includes various organizations like the UN Mission in South Sudan.
The Greater Tonj area of South Sudan, comprising three counties, has been plagued by intercommunal violence and its severe impacts. Enhanced mobility for law enforcement and community peacebuilding agencies has been a significant barrier to preventing crime and issuing warnings about potential security threats. A solution has emerged in the form of 33 pairs of motorbikes, which promise to significantly improve response times and overall community safety.
Gabriel Dut, a leader from Tonj South, emphasized the transformative potential of these motorbikes: “These motorbikes will greatly enhance our ability to respond quickly to emergencies, and that is crucial for us to be able to maintain peace in and between our communities.”
The handover of the motorcycles is a crucial aspect of the Kong Koc community-led peacebuilding initiative, managed by the Reconciliation, Stabilization, and Resilience Trust Fund, which includes organizations like the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
Abuok Anei, a member of the Tonj South Oversight Committee, highlighted the initiative’s significance, stating, “We have wasted so much time fighting each other. Now, with this project, we hope that affected families will receive the justice they deserve and, more importantly, that we can resolve our differences peacefully and move towards a future of development.”
The motorcycles were procured through the South Sudan Multi-Partner Trust Fund, exemplifying a collaborative effort to bolster peace and security within the region.
The deployment of motorbikes in the Greater Tonj area promises to enhance law enforcement and peacebuilding efforts, aiming to alleviate intercommunal tensions and improve emergency response capabilities. This initiative, framed within the Kong Koc project, underscores the importance of community-led strategies in fostering sustainable peace and development. Through continued support and effective implementation, the affected communities strive towards a more peaceful future.
