Emmanuel Okwi, the captain of the Uganda Cranes, has officially announced his retirement from national duty at the age of 32. This announcement was made on March 18, 2025. Okwi expressed his desire to allow emerging talents the opportunity to shine ahead of the upcoming 2025 CHAN tournament and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
With an exciting new era on the horizon for Ugandan football, particularly with East Africa hosting the CHAN in August and the AFCON in 2027, Okwi believes it is the right time for him to step back. He stated, “Having cherished all those memories, I believe it is time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young football players.”
Reflecting on his career, Okwi expressed pride in representing his country and stated, “Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honour.” He acknowledged the support from fans and extended special thanks to his family, Coach Bobby Williamson, and successive coaches who were instrumental in his journey.
Throughout his career, Okwi scored 28 goals in 95 appearances, having made his debut in 2009. He represented Uganda at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored two notable goals against DR Congo and Zimbabwe. Currently, he plays for Kiyovu SC in Rwanda.
