On 12 March, Cheng Yan, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, conducted a meeting with Webster Shamu, who serves as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Zimbabwean Parliament. The discussion centered on enhancing exchanges and collaborations between the legislative bodies of China and Zimbabwe. Counsellor Zhang Yi was also in attendance during this engagement.
During the meeting, Cheng Yan provided an overview of the recent sessions of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He elaborated on China’s practice of whole-process people’s democracy and emphasized that 2025 will commemorate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Zimbabwe. Cheng expressed optimism for increased collaboration between the legislative bodies, aiming to realize the consensus established by both nations’ leaders and to build on the outcomes from the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Webster Shamu acknowledged the deep mutual trust and friendship shared between Zimbabwe and China. He affirmed the Zimbabwean Parliament’s commitment to maintaining strong ties and enhancing exchanges with the National People’s Congress, emphasizing their role in facilitating cooperative efforts across various sectors between the two nations.
