UTM plans to construct a memorial pillar for Saulos Chilima at the Chikangawa crash site, seeking family consent. The party’s leaders criticized the current administration’s failures and denied ties to controversial legislation, emphasizing their commitment to democratic values and party integrity.
The United Transformation Movement (UTM), represented by its National Campaign Director, Maquenda Chunga, announced plans to erect a memorial pillar at the plane crash site in Chikangawa to honor the late Saulos Chilima. This revelation was made during a significant rally at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu, where Chunga confirmed that the party is currently seeking permission from Chilima’s family to proceed with the construction.
Chunga expressed deep respect for Chilima, acknowledging the former leader’s pivotal role in founding the UTM. He remarked, “We as UTM are still and shall continue mourning the late Chilima who was the founder of the party. We are here as a party because of him.” He also addressed rumors asserting UTM’s involvement in the age limit bill, categorically denying any association with such un-democratic initiatives and reinforcing the party’s commitment to democracy.
UTM President Dalitso Kabambe criticized the current government led by President Lazarus Chakwera, attributing the rising cost of living and prevalent corruption to the administration’s failures. Kabambe called for government accountability, emphasizing his dedication to improving the conditions faced by Malawians.
Furthermore, UTM’s publicity secretary, Felix Njawala, condemned the violence that occurred during recent peaceful vendor demonstrations in Mzuzu, expressing concern over the police’s politicization. He stated that their actions, including the use of teargas, led to the chaos during the protests.
Advisors within UTM, including Mathews Mtumbuka and Patricia Kaliati, echoed critiques of the Chakwera administration, particularly regarding unmet promises to develop the northern region of Malawi. Mtumbuka highlighted unfulfilled commitments such as the construction of Mbelwa University and the upgrading of key infrastructure, while Kaliati lamented that certain senior party members had abandoned their allegiance to Chilima’s legacy shortly after his passing.
The UTM is actively planning to honor its late founder, Saulos Chilima, by constructing a memorial pillar at the crash site while facing challenges related to governance and party cohesion. The leadership critiques the current administration’s failures, emphasizing a commitment to address key issues such as corruption and infrastructure development. The active involvement of UTM figures in public discussions illustrates the party’s strategic focus on maintaining its identity and continuing Chilima’s legacy.
