The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has recently appointed Sheryl Hermonstine as its new President after conducting its delayed Annual General Meeting and Election of Officer Bearers on Sunday at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown. Hermonstine received five votes in the presidential election, surpassing Dr. Ariane Mangar, who secured one vote. It has been noted that several clubs chose to abstain from the voting process, and the incumbent President, Aubrey Hutson, was absent during the elections.
According to the AAG’s constitution, nominees must communicate their intent to run for office if they are not present at the AGM by submitting a letter to the Returning Officer during the election. Prior to her election as President, Hermonstine served as the First Vice President and acted as President when Hutson was suspended in 2023 due to issues related to the CARIFTA Games.
The newly elected officials alongside Hermonstine include Mark Scott as First Vice President, Mayfield Taylor-Trim as Second Vice President, Dwayne Carter as Treasurer, and Niall Stanton as Assistant Treasurer. Serving as Committee Members are Dr. Ariane Mangar, Thelson Williams, Tyrone Smith, Osafo Dos Santos, and Towanna McAlmont. Hermonstine’s administration also retained James Cole as General Secretary and appointed Kenisha Headley as Assistant General Secretary.
The election, overseen by Attorney-at-Law Emily Dodson as the Returning Officer, comes after a series of public disputes that have underscored ongoing governance challenges within the sport of Track and Field in Guyana.
The AAG has recently undergone a significant transition in leadership with the election of Sheryl Hermonstine as its new President, following a prolonged period of governance issues. Hermonstine, who previously acted in a leadership capacity, is joined by a new executive team aimed at revitalizing the organization. This change occurs amidst challenges in governance that have affected the sport, highlighting the need for stable leadership moving forward.
