Máximo Napa Castro, a 61-year-old Peruvian fisherman, has been rescued after drifting for 95 days in the Pacific Ocean. As reported by Peru’s state news agency Andina, Napa Castro departed from Marcona on December 7, 2024, but encountered treacherous weather that altered his course. He was ultimately located by an Ecuadorian fishing vessel on March 11, 2025, in waters near northern Peru, in a state of severe dehydration and near death.

During a poignant interview, Napa Castro recounted his harrowing survival experience, subsisting on rainwater and scavenging for food, which included insects, birds, and even a turtle. Notably, he endured a stretch of 15 days without any nourishment. Despite the trials, his family provided him with motivation to persevere, as he continuously thought of his mother and newborn granddaughter. “I thought of my mother and my newborn granddaughter every day. I didn’t want to die for them,” he remarked.

His daughter, Inés Napa Torres, expressed deep gratitude to the Ecuadorian fishermen whose actions saved her father’s life. She took to social media to thank the rescuers and shared the family’s long search for him. As early as March 3, she had posted on Facebook, revealing their ongoing distress; “We never imagined we’d go through this… but we will not lose hope, Dad.”

After receiving essential medical care at the Hospital Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes in Paita, situated near the Peruvian-Ecuadorian border, Napa Castro has since recovered and was discharged on Saturday.

In summary, Máximo Napa Castro’s survival story is a testament to human resilience and the strength of family ties.
