The PNG Expo on July 2-3, 2025, in Port Moresby will facilitate networking and business growth for suppliers and contractors in the energy sector. Major companies are participating, and significant developments in gas production are unfolding, positioning PNG as a vital player in the industry’s future.
Papua New Guinea (PNG) presents abundant opportunities for suppliers and contractors, bolstered by major energy industry players. The upcoming Papua New Guinea Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference (PNG Expo) is scheduled for July 2-3 at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby. This event will feature a tailored exhibition space alongside a program of informative speakers, designed to facilitate networking and business growth within the region.
Prominent exhibitors such as Metso, Blackwoods, Sandvik, Dreager, Lincom, and Putzmeister have confirmed their participation, alongside returning sponsor TriCab for 2025. The resources sector in PNG, a pivotal engine of economic growth, has seen substantial developments, particularly in gold, copper, silver, nickel, oil, and gas since the early 1900s.
Recent milestones include the completion of the Angore gas development by a partnership of Santos, ExxonMobil, Kumul Petroleum Holdings, Mineral Resources Development Company, and JZ Nippon. This project accesses a trillion cubic feet of natural gas, contributing up to 350 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) daily to ensure steady PNG LNG production. Since its launch in April 2014, PNG LNG has supplied over 83 million tonnes of LNG, with an investment exceeding $19 billion and consistent production exceeding its 6.9 million tonnes per annum nameplate capacity.
Santos Managing Director and CEO Kevin Gallagher noted that Angore’s successful production highlights the abundance of PNG’s gas resources, especially in Hela province. The company is also focusing on advancing multiple gas development projects. “Associated gas from Agogo and Moran could deliver at least another 125 mmscf per day, and we are working to finalize this by 2026,” said Gallagher. Additionally, the exploration at Hides Footwall could potentially add another 160 mmscf per day if successful.
Gas fields such as P’nyang, Muruk, and Juha are also being prepared to support ongoing PNG LNG production. Gallagher remarked, “This is a great position for Santos and PNG LNG to be in – we are spoiled for choice with no shortage of healthy upstream development options to keep our LNG infrastructure full.” With significant developments on the horizon for Santos and other industry leaders, the PNG Expo’s appeal continues to grow among industry stakeholders.
In conclusion, PNG is experiencing significant growth in its resources sector, particularly in gas production, evidenced by recent projects such as the Angore gas development. The upcoming PNG Expo serves as an essential platform for industry players to connect, foster business relationships, and explore emerging opportunities. The proactive efforts by companies like Santos reinforce PNG’s promising landscape for investment and production within the energy sector.
