Malawi’s Confederation of Chambers of Commerce has launched the Single Digital Portal to modernize trade processes and provide a digital marketplace for SMEs. This initiative includes online access to trade documents, a strategy for reducing bureaucracy, and a 50% discount on registration fees to encourage adoption.
In an effort to enhance trade processes and expand its international presence, Malawi’s Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry recently launched a digital platform known as the Single Digital Portal. This innovative platform aims to automate trade activities and provides local producers with a virtual marketplace to connect with global buyers.
The Single Digital Portal serves not just as a marketplace for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) but also facilitates digital access to essential administrative features, such as online applications and the issuance of trade documents, including Certificates of Origin. This modernization of processes is anticipated to significantly streamline operations.
Vitumbiko Mumba, the Minister of Trade and Industry, emphasized the importance of this initiative by stating, “This portal will significantly reduce bureaucracy in trade by enabling digital applications for licenses and trade documents. The world is going digital, and Malawi cannot afford to be left behind.”
Wisely Phiri, the president of the Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, mentioned that this platform is in line with their digital transformation strategy, which extends until 2026. He noted, “This platform allows manufacturers to obtain certificates of origin online, making it easier for them to export goods and attract international buyers. Previously, businesses had to visit our offices physically, but now everything is streamlined digitally.”
Additionally, the system incorporates identity verification through a partnership with the National Registration Bureau (NRB), ensuring that only verified businesses and individuals are allowed to transact. To promote the adoption of the platform, the MCCCI has reduced registration fees by 50% for businesses that apply online.
The launch of the Single Digital Portal in Malawi represents a significant stride towards modernizing trade and reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies. By providing a digital marketplace and administrative functionalities, this initiative aims to enhance accessibility for small and medium enterprises.
